70 Degree Ramp

Ramp Renderings

In the back of the gym there is a 70 degree ramp and there are two purposes for its construction. The majority of the time, it will be a steep bouldering wall with the floor rising with the wall. This is done so that when you fall on such a steep angle you do not get injured, since the padding is close to you. The other practical reason the ramp was constructed is so that once the walls are completed, we can get the lifts and other machinery out of the roped climbing arena, which has been dug down 10 feet.

However, at design this was all theory and had yet to be proven that it would actually work. We recently hooked up a lift to a 5000lb wench and lowerd it down the ramp — we were all a bit nervous, to say the least. Curious as to the success of this venture? Watch the video below.

Taking Shape

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

Here is a video of one of the climbing walls taking shape. Rockwerx has created an incredible system for building climbing walls that focuses on speed and customization. When the trucks arrive, a large percentage of the wall has already been fabricated, but it is done in such a way that if we need to change an angle, or want to create a different feature from what was created in the model, it is possible without losing an entire day from the schedule. Watch this wall being framed from start to finish for a visual explanation of the process.

A walk through on how Rockwerx constructs walls.

Blizzard ‘09

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

During last week’s blizzard, a 60′ semi-trailer arrived with a full load, in the heart of the storm. It was carrying critical parts of the climbing wall structure and needed to be unloaded and brought indoors. Luckily we had a crew that was more than willing to rise to the task and brave the elements. It was a brutal time to be outside lifting heavy steel, but we kept eachother going and got the job done. Here are some pictures and video of the adventure.
